Doing Genealogy While Quarantined: Getting Started

Willow Tree

Saturday, March 21, 2020

Next Saturday, would have been our monthly in-person meeting of the Brentwood Genealogy Group. While the library is closed, this does not mean that the Brentwood Library will stop providing genealogy services at the time. We can’t say what form meetings and programs will take right now, but we can say that we certainly continue to provide services, answer questions, and offer access to our library resources.

In fact, in this blog I would like to belatedly introduce a recording of one of our speakers from this past year.

Before that though, if you are hoping to continue with your genealogy research, or even just get started, please, let me make sure to encourage you to make sure to explore our databases.

One of my favorite digital resources at the library are our Genealogy databases. FOLD3, Heritage Quest, and My Heritage  are dedicated genealogy resources which can all be accessed from your home computer.

You can find them all listed via this link: https://brentwoodnylibrary.org/research-databases?tid=15.

We are also happy to announce, that the most well-known genealogy database, Ancestry, is now available to access from home!

Our history databases (https://brentwoodnylibrary.org/research-databases?tid=17) and newspaper databases (https://brentwoodnylibrary.org/research-databases?tid=24) are also great for supplementing your investigations and I would encourage you to explore those links as well. Especially if you are interested in finding obituaries, news stories related to your our relatives, or mentions of your relatives in local papers.

Today I would also like to invite you to watch a program given by Alec Feretti: The Ancestor Archivist, who spoke to our Brentwood group this past year.

The subject was an in-depth introduction to Hispanic Genealogy. While the meeting was well attended and appreciated, I know that many people who were interested - some considering just starting their genealogy - were unable to make it. So, if you are considering exploring Hispanic genealogy, or genealogy in general, this could be a great time for an introduction.

Even if this isn’t your heritage, though, Alec is the sort of presenter and researcher who can provide helpful tips and resources for your own investigations, no matter the family background. So feel free to click below and enjoy.

The recording is courtesy of our friend Mr. Peter DiPippo of the Italian genealogy group.
