It's Kind of a Funny Story is a novel about a stressed teenager named Craig Gilner who begins to feel the effects of his mental health issues. He finds that the hobbies he used to enjoy are no longer entertaining, and he quickly starts to turn to suicidal thoughts. Although his friends and family attempt to help him, they do not understand the magnitude of the situation. One night, he attempts suicide and fails. When he checks himself into a mental hospital, his life begins to change greatly. Craig begins to realize that the change he needed was in himself all along.
What was your favorite, or least favorite part of the book and why?
My favorite part of the book is when Craig begins to draw "brain maps" for all the patients in the mental hospital. This is my favorite part of the book because Greg begins to find his purpose and brings joy to everyone in the hospital.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would recommend this book to a friend because everyone should read this book. It is intimate and discusses topics teens may be too afraid or ashamed to talk about.
Is there anything else you want other kids to know about this book?
This book is for a specific audience due to certain topics being discussed. If you are sensitive to topics such as suicide, sexual content, and self-harm, I would read with caution.
